The much anticipated Spring Summer 2015 nail trend report from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) has arrived! Whether it’s due to Australia’s warm weather or signature casual beach style, simple plain nails and nude colours were again dominating the runways. However, it was the team of the newcomer FABY whose manicures got everyone talking. The team did their job exceptionally well showing off a huge variety of colours and creating daring manicures. They also demonstrated how statement nail designs and even glitter can successfully work with a ‘no-makeup’ beauty look. And of course, kudos to Ali Magliveras of Essie for introducing negative space manicures to the Australian fashion scene.
Now, let’s enjoy some of the best nail designs from MBFWA Spring Summer 2015:
1. Metallic Nails at Alice McCall
At the playful Alice McCall show, manicures complimented 3 different make-up looks. Models wearing charcoal smoky eyes were paired with a charcoal grey FABY Shadow Puppets, metallic coppery eyes with a textured coppery orange FABY Sunset Farms and finally, silver eyes with a metallic pewter FABY Guess A Color.
2. Matte White Nails at Jennifer Kate
At the 90s inspired Jennifer Kate show, the nails were colour matched with white Reebok sneakers and the staging for the show. Opaque white nails were achieved with FABY Optical White and Matte Top Coat.
3. Grey Nails at Manning Cartell
The Manning Cartell show was all about bright colour, print and different textures. Striking minimalist makeup with a bold red lip was complimented with grey nails. Essie Cocktail Bling, a cool trendy grey shade.
4. 3D Stiletto Nails at Bondi Bather
Bondi Bather’s swimsuit collaboration with Hello Kitty meant that there would be lots of colour and embellishments. So were the nails! Long, almond shaped stilettos in the flesh shade FABY Naturally were embellished with 3D pom poms and roses.
5. Rose Gold Nails at Bec & Bridge
The bronzed goddesses that walked down the runway at the Bec & Bridge show were wearing rose gold nails achieved with Coat Champagne Showers. Rose gold is a perfect day to night nail colour and the show proved it once again. Whether they were wearing gowns or swimsuits the models looked impeccable sporting the same nail look.
6. Edgy Moon Nails at Johanna Johnson
At the 1920’s inspired Johanna Johnson show, the nails were all about sophistication and glamour. A crimson red with black edged moon nail design was created using FABY As You Like and Black is Black. If you want to learn how to do these nails yourself, check out this tutorial. The tutorial was done by yours truly in 2013 and showcases the exact nail design that the FABY manicurists replicated in 2015. Great minds think alike!
7. Negative Space Nail at Gary Bigeni
At the Gary Bigeni show the nails were fresh and edgy. Negative space half moons with the opaque white moon details were created with Essie Blanc. The trick was to get the perfect ‘bare nail’ base as negative space manicures are very unforgiving when it comes to imperfections. That’s where the Essie Ridge Filling Base Coat was essential. If you want to try negative space manicures for yourself, this tutorial will be helpful.
8. Dark Blue Nails at Watson x Watson
Blue on blue, layer upon layer was the style for the Watson X Watson show. The nails reflected this with a deep navy blue base in FABY Save The Drive In and a touch of glitter over the top, FABY The Milky Way.
PC: Sonny Vandevelde for FABY, Julia Molodeva for SoNailicious.
So what do you think guys, what’s your favorite nail look? Are you keen to try any?
