Black nails. If there is one colour that connotes rebellion, it’s black. Black is the result of light being absorbed, so in its purest form it’s the absence of colour. In fashion, black is associated with elegance and style. In colour psychology black is attributed to the hidden and the unknown. This color gives protection from external emotional stress by creating a barrier between itself and the outside world.

If that all sounds a bit morbid, black is also the colour of rock’n’roll! Plus, style icons like Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham, both favor black for their nails.

Have a look through our gallery and tell us, what do black nails mean to you? Do you wear black nails often?

  • I love black nails and how they can go with anything and everything!
Just the other day my mum was telling me how when she was my age, black polish was such a rarity that it didn’t matter how much it was or what brand, if you found it, you bought it! Feeling pretty lucky that it’s so readily accessible in so many different finishes these days :)

    • Agree, black is one of the most multitasking colours, if not The Most. And yes, I remember that time when I had to travel to London just to get a bottle of black polish (in 90-s)… xx

  • I like black nails a lot when they are short. Its also wonderful with bright colours and metals. I don’t wear it too often, because mainly I like colour mixes, where black is only one in. I like painted nails better with more than one colour.
I’ve just gotten a black “leather” one and quite like it. I’ll try to combine it with some self made gold and jewel-decals.

    • I hear you! I used to wear black more often before SoNailicious happened. Now it’s all about patterns and colours. Who would want to see the same old black nail everyday? lol

  • There was a phase when only black used to be my nail color ! nothing else ! now it is a rare occasion when i have black on my nails

    • Oh yes! I guess colour psychologists are right when they say people who choose to wear black colour all the time are seeking protection from outside word and trying to hide their emotions – at certain stages of my life I wore a lot of black. I can clearly see now why.

  • I really love black, but only on short, neat nails – I feel like it can look a bit claw-like on long nails!

    • Yes, I think for everyday I also prefer the short, neat nail look. But for a special occasion black stilettos can look very appropriate too. Think Lady Gaga or Rhianna ;)

  • You are right about black .!!!
Although I love it .. My recent Zoya Storm black failed to look good on me :( so I am back to colors …
